Finally, we discuss how THz measurements are guiding the development of nanowire-based devices, with the instance of single-nanowire photoconductive THz receivers. Photonic built-in circuits (PICs) are considered as the way in which to make photonic techniques or subsystems cheap and ubiquitous. PICs still are several orders of magnitude more expensive than their microelectronic counterparts, which has restricted their utility to a few area of interest markets.
